Buzz Williams in the Carbondale, PA news

Carbondale, PA - As an Independent Reformed Presbyterian pastor, M.O. Buzz Williams has been concerned for many years about what he calls "a crisis of disobedience" within the Evangelical Church. Citing the Great Commission - the command that Jesus gave His followers in Matthew 28 to "go into all the world and preach the gospel to all people, making disciples of all those who believe" - Buzz said he sees little interest from fellow evangelical leaders in carrying out that divine decree.

"Sad to say, there are fewer and fewer leaders within the Evangelical Church who are actively involved in intentional disciple-making," he related.  "Consequently, their relationships with the people they're supposed to be, and should be, discipling are often paper thin." Believing it better to light a candle than curse the darkness, Buzz told the NEWS that this systemic failure inspired him to write his first book, Disciple Maker, which was released on June 25.

Buzz is a Carbondale native who moved with his family to Mississippi in 1959, following his sophomore year at Benjamin Franklin High School. Last month, he returned to Carbondale to attend a reunion of his graduating class at BFHS.  While he was in town, he also donated a copy of his book to the Carbondale Public Library.

“I wrote this book as a ministry resource tool for pastors and church leaders,” he explained, “because if you look at the European model, this already happened there and as a result the once-great churches of Europe are gone.  They’re museums and restaurants.” “Now the same thing is happening here in America,” Buzz warned, sounding the clarion call of his book.  “We’re hearing a lot more in evangelical churches about social justice and liberal philosophy than we are about the gospel.” That, in turn, has produced fewer and fewer disciples, and far fewer disciple makers, he says. “The model for disciple-making is Jesus Christ Himself,” Buzz related.  “He didn’t sit in church and wait for visitors to come in, He was out in the synagogues, in sinners’ homes, in the marketplace with His followers.  He showed them first of all how to be disciples themselves and secondly how to make disciples of others.” Nevertheless, he said, many churches are failing to properly promote discipleship and disciple-making. “When I ask pastors why they’re not doing it, they often tell me that their church just isn’t ready for it yet,” he noted.  “And I always say, ‘But the command was given 2,000 years ago.’  There’s really no excuse.”

Buzz is a graduate of Samford University and Birmingham Theological Seminary.  He is former President and Chairman of the Board for Church Revitalization International, Inc.  He and his wife Carol are the parents of six children and grandparents of 15.
